Polyelectrolyte Multilayers for Forward Osmosis, Combining the Right Multilayer and Draw Solution

نویسندگان

چکیده

Polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) are highly promising materials as selective separation layers on the inside of hollow fiber membranes. We investigate forward osmosis (FO) performance poly(4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS)/poly(allylamine) (PAH)- and PSS/poly(ethylene imine)-based PEM membranes apply different draw solutions. The show properties, demonstrated by their retention behavior under nanofiltration conditions against five relevant solutions (NaCl, MgCl2, MgSO4, Na2SO4, trisodium citrate (TSC)). Subsequently, relation between properties FO was studied for various PSS/PAH showed lowest reverse salt flux MgCl2 while PSS/PEI Na2SO4 TSC. Combining right membrane with solution is thus key to getting low fluxes in FO. Cross-linking PEMs resulted an overall lower water flux; however, selectivity not affected.

Exploration of polyepoxysuccinic acid as a novel draw solution in the forward osmosis process

Polyepoxysuccinic acid (PESA) is a green corrosion scale inhibitor. When PESA is used for wastewater desalination in the forward osmosis (FO) process, the diluted PESA solution could be used for cooling systems. In our investigation, the effects of membrane orientation, temperature and flow rate on FO performance are studied using PESA as a draw solute. The results show that the effect of tempe...

Performance of Potassium Bicarbonate and Calcium Chloride Draw Solutions for Desalination of Saline Water Using Forward Osmosis

Forward osmosis (FO) has recently drawn attention as a promising membrane based method for seawater and brackish water desalination. In this study, we focus on the use of calciun chloride (CaCl2) and potassium bicarbonate (KHCO3) as inorganic salt draw solution candidates due to their appropriate performance in water flux and reverse salt diffusion as well as reasonable cost. The experiments we...

Desalination by ammonia–carbon dioxide forward osmosis: Influence of draw and feed solution concentrations on process performance

Forward (direct) osmosis (FO) using semi-permeable polymeric membranes may be a viable alternative to reverse osmosis as a lower cost and more environmentally friendly desalination technology. The driving force in the described FO process is provided by a draw solution comprising highly soluble gases—ammonia and carbon dioxide. Using a commercially available FO membrane, experiments conducted i...
